Workplace Noise Assessment and Monitoring

Our Workplace Noise Assessment and Monitoring service measures the personal noise exposure of your workers. We will also compare the results of the noise monitoring to the limits given in the Noise Regulations. If needed, we will also suggest real-world solutions to reduce any problems in your workplace to keep you compliant and your workforce safe.

Why conduct a workplace noise assessment?

Hearing loss caused by workplace noise is a major occupational disease. For instance, the HSE say that for the period 2018 – 2021 there were about 14,000 workers with workplace-related hearing problems. There were also 1125 new cases of occupational deafness from 2010 to 2019.

The statistics highlight the importance of knowing the noise exposure levels in your workplace. Noise monitoring will tell you what the impact of noise exposure has on your workers and also what you can do about it. Keep your workers safe, stay compliant and avoid litigation.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 applies to all workplaces. All company owners must risk assess their workplaces and have systems in place to reduce noise exposure where needed. We have the expertise to make this process quick and easy to ensure workforce safety and your business compliance. Get in touch to discuss your needs or request a quote.

Workplace Noise Assessment and Monitoring

Competency

All of our consultants are certified as competent by the BOHS. As a result, you can have faith in the results of any noise assessment and noise survey. Noise assessments identify the risks to your workforce. In addition, they suggest suitable ways to reduce noise exposure at the source.  If this is not possible then they will suggest ways of how to best control exposure to a level that is as low as reasonably practicable.

Our consultants also use state-of-the-art dosimeters and sound pressure level meters for noise monitoring. As a result, this enables us to look at A and C weighting and personal dose as well as peak levels simultaneously.

In addition, all of our meters are subject to a strict calibration regime to ensure that any noise measurements we take are accurate and traceable.

How often should I carry out a workplace noise assessment?

Regulations do not state how often you should carry out an assessment, but every company must review noise levels if there is a significant change in how the company operates. This could be by the use of more tools, machines, workers or even changes to the workspace. In general, we recommend that companies carry out workplace noise monitoring at least every two years and ideally every year.

What can I expect from a Synergy Noise Assessment Report?

Our noise monitoring reports contain all of the information you need for your noise risk assessment. These include:

  • A-weighted equivalent sound Level LAeq.
  • C-weighted peak sound level measurement LCpk .
  • The workers’ Daily Personal Exposure Level LEP,d.
  • Sound pressure level measurements from specific activities.
  • Octave band analysis.
  • Practical ways of reducing exposure.
  • Suitability of hearing protection.

We are happy to supply an example workplace noise report for all of our new customers.

Why Choose Synergy for your Workplace Noise Monitoring?

Your Workplace Noise Survey should be carried out by a competent person.

When planning a workplace noise assessment, it is important that you choose the right company. The first thing that you should look for is a company with competent staff. Synergy demonstrates this through consultants who have passed their BOHS W503 exams. In addition, several of our consultants are associate members of the Institute of Acoustics. This is the UK’s Professional body for those working in Acoustics, Sound and Vibration.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 states that companies must use a competent person to look after their health and safety. One of the main requirements is for employers to have suitable and sufficient risk assessments of their workplace activities which may affect employees and other people. By using Synergy, you can be assured that your risk assessments are suitable and sufficient.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

The Regulations require employers to prevent or reduce risks to health and safety from exposure at work.

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations also require employers to ensure that the hearing of employees is protected from excessive noise exposure in their place of work, which could cause hearing loss.

Regulations detail Exposure Action Values and Exposure Limit Values, and the risk assessment should consider employees likely to be exposed to noise at or above a Lower Exposure Action Value.

A risk assessment should be carried out by a competent person. At Synergy, our consultants all have a certificate of competency to prove this.

This is vital because a workplace noise assessment is not just about taking measurements. It is also about observing the working practices to see how exposure takes place. Also, it’s about how to interpret these results as it is not just a case of comparing the daily personal noise exposures against the Exposure Action and Limit Values specified in the Regulations.

A noise survey provided by Synergy will also advise on how to reduce exposure. We offer practical, cost-effective control measures and also advise on suitable hearing protection that provides the correct amount of attenuation.

In addition, guidance from the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) states that reports should be reviewed by a Licentiate who holds the BOHS Certificate of Operational Competence.
