Health Risks Associated with Bioaerosol Exposure
Potential health effects can include:
- Eye, nose and throat irritation
- Coughing and wheeze
- Allergic reactions and sensitisation
- Occupational asthma
- Flu-like symptoms and respiratory inflammation
The risk depends on the type of work, materials handled, ventilation, and how effectively exposure is controlled.
COSHH Requirements and Monitoring Approach
Under COSHH, employers must assess and control exposure to substances hazardous to health — including biological agents and bioaerosols where there is a risk to health.
HSE guidance on monitoring makes clear that monitoring is used to show control is adequate, not to measure health effects.
In bioaerosol settings, monitoring is often used to:
- Identify high exposure tasks/areas
- Evaluate whether controls are effective
- Support risk assessments and improvement plans
- Provide evidence for audits, clients, and regulators
For certain regulated biowaste facilities, the Environment Agency has published guidance on approaches to environmental bioaerosol monitoring (M9).
